Villarreal defender Diego Godin is keen to join Atletico Madrid.

The Uruguay international is expected to be sold this week after Villarreal clinched the signing of Valencia defender Carlos Marchena yesterday.

Godin said: "I have wanted to take a leap. I always like to improve. Villarreal are a great team and for me it was ideal to go to a club which was organized and not very big.

"It was the best way to adapt to Spanish football.

"Now I want to make the leap to a bigger club with history and that aspires to win trophies."
