Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish has suspended Barry Bannan after he was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving on Sunday.

The 21-year old Scotland midfielder has been penalised heavily by McLeish after being involved in a motorway accident with the former Scotland national team boss deciding to suspend him until further notice.

Bannan is suspended from playing or training with the first team until the end of the inquiry which at this stage has no end date.

"Barry Bannan has been suspended while the club carries out internal enquiries into allegations which arose last weekend," he said.

"He will not be available for this weekend's game (at Sunderland)."
