Villa striker Benteke wins D'Afrique Trophy

Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke has won the D'Afrique Trophy.

The Daily Mail reports Benteke saw off the challenge of Chelsea frontrunner Romelu Lukaku, currently on loan at Everton, to be voted D'Afrique Trophy winner, in an event run by French television station Canal Plus.

Lukaku rose to prominence on loan at West Brom last season, and has made even more of an impact so far at Goodison Park, but Benteke's 23 goals in his debut campaign at Villa Park proved decisive.

Benteke, who, like Lukaku, comes from a Congolese family, said: "I love playing for Belgium and feel as much Belgian as Congolese, but it is still a great honour to get this award."
