Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov insists their style of play is as good as any team in the Premiership.

Tottenham fans criticised the claret and blues by chanting 'boring, boring Villa' throughout last weekend's goalless draw at White Hart Lane.

"Everyone in football is entitled to an opinion but it was hard to see where Arsene Wenger was coming from when he described us as a long-ball team a couple of weeks ago," said Petrov.

"It's not true. Our form over the past three-and-a-half seasons is proof enough of that. We are also through to the Carling Cup final, and you don't get many long-ball teams that go all the way to Wembley.

"We have done it by playing good football and varying our game.

"There's times when we put the opposition under pressure by making long passes, but most of the time we knock the ball around. There are lots of strengths in this team.

"Right now we have the best defensive record in the league and we can still go above Tottenham by winning the game in hand over them.

"The last few months of the season will be crucial and we aim to keep our excellent defensive record going while scoring a few more goals."
