Villa signing Jenas: Ramos brought out my best at Tottenham

Aston Villa signing Jermaine Jenas says he played his best football under Juande Ramos at Tottenham.

Jenas admits he's struggled to fulfil his potential during his career.

"At Forest, I did develop very quickly," he said, "Then, I went on to win Young Player of the Year a couple of seasons later after signing for Newcastle and I picked up England caps after getting a call-up at 19.

"For me, it wasn't about realising the potential, it was about maintaining it. That might have been where I struggled. I went to Spurs and it didn't probably go as well as I wanted it to.

"When I signed for Spurs the squad was huge and I was constantly being rotated. I played for a few years, scored a few goals and was just in and out. It was hard to pick up a rhythm.

"Basically, I stagnated and my career was not as fluid as I would have liked it to have been.

"When Juande Ramos came in at Spurs - didn't speak a word of English but for some reason, I played my best football under him. I don't know what happened. I liked his methods in training.

"I liked his style of play. He liked me. He didn't put any restraints on me, he told me to go and express myself. That brought out the best in me. That got me my start for England.

"Since then it's been frustrating."
