Aston Villa have beaten Portland Timbers on penalties following a 2-2 friendly draw at JELD-WEN Field on Tuesday.
Villa opened the scoring four minutes before half-time when Ciaran Clark nipped to the back post to head home Barry Bannan's corner before the Timbers made it 1-1 when Colombian Sebastian Rincon finished Franck Songo'o's corner in the 76th minute.
Four minutes later, however, Villa's new signing Matthew Lowton edged his side ahead with another goal from a corner but Portland again equalized courtesy of Rodney Wallace's deflected shot.
A penalty shootout was then required to separate the two teams with Villa keeper Brad Guzan keeping out Bright Dike's effort before Samir Carruthers beat Timbers gloveman Joe Bendik for the win.
