Aston Villa's run in the Uefa Cup has come to an end after losing 2-0 (3-1 on aggregate) to Russian side CSKA Moscow.
Taking a 1-1 result into the fixture at Luzhniki Stadium, Villa were confident of getting a result but were finally outclassed by Moscow.
Martin O'Neill played an inexperienced side that had no Gareth Barry, Emile Heskey, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Ashley Young and James Milner among others and it was the Russians who reaped the benefits.
A 61st minute strike from Yuri Zhirkov and an injury time goal to the prolific Vagner Love did the damage for Moscow.
Villa manager O'Neill said he was disappointed to be out but says it's not the end of the world with experience given to his young players invaluable.
''I'm disappointed we've gone out of the competition,'' said O'Neill.
''But we've played a lot of games this year, 11 or 12 more than we did throughout the whole of last season.
''It's not a decision that was taken lightly, and if I had thought of playing just young players then we would not have travelled here on Tuesday, stayed the three nights and gone back on Friday.
''Circumstances forced me into making my decision, and whilst I am disappointed we were beaten, I will have to see what the rest of the season brings to see if that disappointment is worsened.''
