Aston Villa's James Milner is relishing his role in central midfield, citing the extra responsibility of the position as a major factor.
The England international has enjoyed some stellar form in recent months and is adamant that if he wasn't deployed to a wing during his youth days at Leeds United, he would have been making a similar impact as he is now much earlier.
"I played in the middle coming through at Leeds in the under-12s, 13 and 14s and enjoyed it very much," said Milner.
"But then it always seems to be the way coming through that when you are a younger player you seem to see young centre-backs get played at right-back and central midfielders played wide.
"It seems to be the way as there is not so much responsibility.
"But I enjoy playing in the middle and I am delighted to be playing in there. I feel I can influence the game a bit more and get involved.
"Sometimes when you are wide, you are waiting for other people to bring you into the game, but when you are in the middle you can go and take the game by the scruff of the neck."
