Aston Villa defender Carlos Cuellar's proposed return to Rangers is unlikely to happen now that Alex McLeish will become the English club's new boss.

Reports suggest that Villa are close to officially signing McLeish, who walked out on Birmingham City last weekend, and it is believed he does not want to let the Spaniard leave Villa Park. Cuellar, who played at Ibrox during the 2007/08 season, had emerged as a top target for 'Gers boss Ally McCoist but with McLeish's impending arrival, it appears highly unlikely he will be given permission to depart according to SunSport.
