Villa move for Chelsea winger Wright-Phillips

Aston Villa are monitoring Shaun Wright-Phillips' situation at Chelsea.

Alerted that Chelsea may make the England winger available this summer, Villa boss Martin O'Neill is waiting for encouragement from Stamford Bridge to move for the midfielder.

West Ham and Tottenham are among Premiership rivals also being linked with SWP.

O'Neill's interest in Wright-Phillips has always been maintained despite the arrival of Watford's Ashley Young in January. He actually revealed in January that he might rekindle his interest in the Chelsea winger, despite the capture of Young.

"It wasn't a case of Wright-Phillips instead of Ashley, absolutely not," O'Neill said at the time.

O'Neill revealed that Wright-Phillips had been keen to come. He added: "Wright-Phillips, according to the agents, would definitely have wanted to have come (on loan).

"When it looked as if he wasn't in Chelsea's plans, we had agreed a loan but it fell through. Chelsea decided not to go through with it."
