Villa made late attempt to trump West Ham for Nolan

Aston Villa made a late bid to trump West Ham United for former Newcastle United midfielder Kevin Nolan.

The Sunday Mirror says Villa made a last-ditch plea with Nolan to turn his back on Championship football and remain in the top-flight.

But Nolan refused to do a U-turn after giving his word to Hammers co-owner David Sullivan that he would move to the relegated club if they could reach an agreement with Newcastle.

Nolan's departure has sparked fury among the Geordie supporters who idolised him. It has also led to uneasy tension between manager Alan Pardew and the Newcastle board because Pardew did not want to sell his influential captain.
