Villa legend Withe: I see plenty of myself in Benteke

Aston Villa legend Peter Withe admits he sees a lot of himself in Christian Benteke.

The Belgian is just two shy of becoming the first Villa player since Withe to score 20 league goals in a season.

Withe, who hit the goal that won the European Cup for Villa in 1982, said: "I see a lot of me in him - we're very similar. He's a big guy who wins a lot of headers but maybe I was a bit fitter, I could run all day.

"I've been saying over the years that Villa need a 20-goals-a-season man in the league if they're going to be successful again. But this time, they've needed one just to have a chance of staying up.

"We had goals coming in from other players too like Gary Shaw, who got 18, while Tony Morley, Gordon Cowans and Dennis Mortimer got in double figures.

"But I really hope that Benteke does equal or even beat the 20 goals I got. The big danger is that he thinks he's arrived, that he's done it all, because he's achieved nothing yet.

"If I was Benteke I'd be looking to do even better next season. If I scored 20, I'd want 21 the year after.

"After the title year I reached 20 goals in the next two seasons as well."
