Villa legend McNaught urges Lambert to bang some heads

Aston Villa legend Kevin McNaught has urged new manager Paul Lambert to bang some heads together in preseason.

He wants fellow Scot Lambert, who has swapped the comfort of Norwich for the heat of Villa, to get tough.

"Paul has to get in there and sort things out but in a way that keeps the players on his side," McNaught told the Daily Star Sunday.

"It's important he gets in that dressing room and separates the wheat from the chaff - and quickly - because the fans will demand instant success.

"I don't think he's the type who will look for a settling-in period - he will know it's him or them.

"If there are players who don't buy into his way immediately they need to go and I'm sure that is how he will see it. There are a few big egos in the team and I don't understand why, because none of them has ever won anything.

"The egos are a legacy from the Martin O'Neill days. He motivated players by putting them on big contracts and telling them how good they were.

"I remember once after they got beaten heavily by Manchester City they were off to Dubai for four days.

"I asked Ron Saunders if he'd have taken us away after a bad result and he said, 'You know the answer to that'.

"We'd have been on the training ground!"
