Guzan is likely to get the nod in the Carling Cup against Portsmouth tomorrow, just to remind his older countryman he is around.
Friedel said: "I have always been lucky that I have had self-motivation.
"There were years when we didn't have strength in depth in the goalkeeping position at Blackburn, so you had to spur yourself on.
"But Brad Guzan has an incredible work ethic and I know is very, very good.
"Maybe in the back of my mind it keeps me going. It is paramount in the Premier League you have at least two good goalkeepers."
