Villa keeper Friedel confident of survival

Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel is supremely confident that the club can remain in the top flight next season.

Villa currently sits 14th on the league table, just one point above the relegation zone and have saluted just once in their past six matches.

There has been plenty written about the club in recent times, suggesting there was a mutiny in the playing group but Friedel addressed all of these things, hoping to put the record straight.

"We're very confident that we will escape the predicament, we are also very confident that we need to have a long look at ourselves at the end of the season and why we are in this predicament in the first place," he told BBC Sport.

"We've got eight games, 24 points to play for. We're more than confident with the talent we have in the room that we will get the need points. In saying that, up til now we have had a very disappointing season, we all know that, but a lot of things printed are rubbish, some if it true, however we need to wipe the slate clean. For these eight games, for ourselves, for the staff, for the fans, for everybody, for the club, for the chairman.

"We have got to make sure we assure our status in the Premier League.

"There's no mutiny. There hasn't been a mutiny at the club. We're fully behind Gerard Houllier, we're fully behind the club itself, the chairman. We hope the fans get behind us for our games. All we want to do is win football matches and obviously when you don't win football matches, that's when some stories creep out."
