Villa keep tabs on Man Utd striker Smith

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill is keeping tabs on Alan Smith's situation at Manchester United.

The Irishman contemplated the possibility of trying to sign Smith on loan during the January transfer window after his return from a broken leg.

But he eventually snapped up John Carew from Lyon and Ashley Young from Watford on a permanent basis.

O'Neill is keen to add to his attacking options and Smith could come into the equation if he is available now that Liverpool's Craig Bellamy has been priced above what he feels is a fair deal at £10million to £12 million.

Smith is set to hold talks with Sir Alex Ferguson when he returns to Old Trafford from holiday.
