Villa hero Agbonlahor: I would have left if Houllier stayed

Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has slammed the work of former assistant manager Gary McAllister.

The former Leeds United and Liverpool star was drafted in by ex-manager Gerard Houllier last season.

Agbonlahor told The Sun: "Last year I started injured and that was annoying but it got more frustrating.

"It was not so much the manager, but the assistant manager, the way he set up things. I don't think a lot of the players were happy and that is what made us have such a slow start to the season.

"Gerard was not much of a talker, it was more McAllister, but he was not very good to be honest. I did not really get on with him.

"When I got a chance I thought I'd done OK. Then you go four or five games without playing.

"At one stage I thought if this is how it is going to stay and the manager is going to stay here with this formation, then I have to leave. Luckily the manager left and McAllister left as well."
