Aston Villa will battle Newcastle United for Manchester City midfielder Michael Johnson in the summer.

The Sunday Mercury says England under-21 international Johnson has emerged as a target for Villa boss Martin O'Neill.

But Newcastle officials are already preparing a new bid for the £8m-rated 20-year-old.

United tried to sign Johnson last month but couldn't persuade City to sell.
