Villa expecting Makoun signing to boost their chances

Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier expects the arrival of midfielder Jean Makoun from Lyon to boost the chances of his side moving up the Premier League table.

Following the 1-1 draw in the Second City derby with Birmingham at St Andrews on Sunday, the Frenchman admitted he was looking forward to the Cameroon international landing at Villa Park and helping the team move up from 17th.

"He's an experienced midfielder who can either stay as a defensive midfielder or be box-to-box and he will strengthen the squad and that is important," he told Sky Sports.

The 27-year old joined Villa on the weekend for a transfer fee of £6million.
