Villa do enough to overcome Wigan

Aston Villa secured a vital three points against Wigan last night, winning 2-1 at DW Stadium.

In the 25th minute of the clash, Wigan’s James McCarthy made an unfortunate mistake my slicing the ball into his own goal after Villa striker John Carew had nodded down a Stewart Downing cross to give the visitors the lead.

Thankfully for McCarthy, Gary Caldwell got the Latics back on level terms two minutes later with a glancing header from a Charles N’Zogbia free-kick which was the perfect response.

Both sides had good opportunities in the ensuing half-hour but it was England international midfielder James Milner who did the damage for Villa in the 63rd minute.

The ball found Milner on the edge of the box after Wigan keeper Chris Kirkland did not clear well enough and his shot through a crowded penalty area somehow found its way into the back of the net, keeping Villa in 7th position on the table but putting them three points closer to the top four.
