Villa boss Sherwood hoping Spurs work appreciated

Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood hopes his work at Tottenham is appreciated.

Sherwood's time on the Tottenham coaching staff, from 2008-14, coincided with the development of Harry Kane, Ryan Mason, Andros Townsend, Nabil Bentaleb and Danny Rose.

"The most important thing for any manager is to know exactly the quality of the young players he has at the club," Sherwood told the London Evening Standard. "So when the club are spending money, they need to make sure they're not blocking a pathway to young talent.

"I agree that clubs should spend money but you have to make sure you're not buying players who are only marginally better - if at all - than what you have coming through.

"The young players will always have a good look at the transfer windows and see what their club do. The development stage is a crucial part of any club. Between the time they leave the youth team and their 21st birthday, they're preparing for competitive men's football and you have to keep on top of these players."
