Villa boss O'Neill: Young needs greater self-belief

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill says Ashley Young needs greater self-belief to make his mark with England.

O'Neill believes Young needs to take his club confidence into the national squad.

O'Neill said: "Gabby (Agbonlahor) played last year and got discarded. It is difficult. You are lauded when you haven't been involved with England and people are pressing your claim.

"Then you get maybe half an hour to justify that. If it doesn't go so cleverly you can get discarded, not necessarily by the manager but by the people who put you there in the first place.

"You have to have an inner self-confidence. I'm not saying Ashley is over-awed but so far it hasn't happened for him in the manner he would want.

"I still think it will come as he has the talent, but that's something players experience.

"You can be big news at your club, then you step into another arena and you have to prove yourself again. It can be inhibiting."
