Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill is to open contract talks with midfielder Stiliyan Petrov in the New Year.
Petrov, 29, has less than two years left on his current deal which ends in 2010.
The Bulgarian international joined Villa from Celtic for £8m in the summer of 2006.
