Villa boss O'Neill: Carling Cup is alive and well

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill believes they've breathed new life into the Carling Cup after yesterday's final thriller against Manchester United.

Despite the intense despondency after defeat, O'Neill was quick to praise the team and said Villa will be "doing their utmost" to return to Wembley for another showpiece final as quickly as possible.

He told Villa's website: "I thought in the game itself we were absolutely brilliant, particularly in the first half.

"We played really, really great football. There were some magnificent performances.

"You can't keep a team like Manchester United at bay all the time. They came roaring back in the second half and showed the great experience that befits a side who contest Champions League finals and championships galore.

"They've got really good players and they can keep the ball and cause you problems.

"However, I never thought we were out of the game - even at 2-1. It's gone now. I was delighted with the team, absolutely delighted with the side.

"We have been beaten. Players are very, very despondent obviously. But we are going to try our utmost to try and get back here again.

"We will try our utmost to get back because they are great occasions and they are worthwhile."
