Villa boss Lambert no fan of FA Cup

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert has angered fans by admitting the FA Cup is no priority for him.

Lambert says big clubs could do without the famous tournament.

Asked whether the FA Cup is something Villa could do without, Lambert said: "I think if you ask the majority of them (Premier League clubs), if they are being honest, they would do, yes.

"Not because of the money but it's vital to stay in the league. Points are really important. If they are honest enough, people would say the same.

"It's realistic. That's the nature of it. If anybody else says differently, then I'm not sure that they are telling the truth.

"The Premier League is the most vital thing that everybody wants to get into. We are no different. The cup competitions? Absolutely, I want to get through in the FA Cup. But your main one is the league."

Asked to quantify what counted as success, Lambert added: "People judge success by the length of their contract nowadays. That's how people judge success."
