The 39-year-old Scotland international made is delighted to have returned to the club as Phil Brown's men bid to bounce back from last season's relegation from the Championship.

Alexander told Preston's official website: "I am really excited as it was something I was hoping for.

"I have finalised leaving Burnley today (Wednesday) so I could finally make the move. It is brilliant.

"I didn't sleep much last night because I was looking forward to training with the boys today and I am looking forward to everything."
