Vermaelen would welcome more defensive signings at Arsenal

Arsenal stopper Thomas Vermaelen has no problem with manager Arsene Wenger bringing in new signings.

Wenger has been chasing Bolton's Gary Cahill and Chris Samba of Blackburn to strengthen his defence this summer.

"If you play for a club like Arsenal, you always have this expectation," said the Belgium defender. "In my first year as well, nobody knew me and you come to this big club and you have to play every game and there are expectations, of course.

"This year, it's the same again. The only thing you have to do as an individual is to perform well.

"The club being linked with other players is a thing you have to deal with when you play for a big club. It's always like that.

"If you know there's somebody behind you and chasing you, then the best comes out in you. If you're a good player you have to handle this pressure. Otherwise you don't belong at this club."
