Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen suffered an Achilles injury whilst on international duty in September and is now set to go under the knife which will rule him out for six weeks. Arsenal had been hoping rest would cure the problem but they have now decided to send the player for surgery.
The Belgian international is hoping to be back playing in between four to six weeks after undergoing the operation in Sweden.
"I'll undergo this operation in Sweden," said Vermaelen.
"According to the specialist who will operate on me it's a little tendon situated beside the Achilles tendon which is provoking the irritation."
