Vermaelen insists Arsenal Champions League hopes still intact

Thomas Vermaelen insists Arsenal's Champions League hopes remains alive.

The Gunners must overcome a first-leg 2-1 deficit against Porto at the Emirates.

Arsenal have rebounded from recent setbacks that included comprehensive losses to Manchester United and Chelsea as well as disappointments earlier in the campaign.

"We need that spirit again in the home match," said Vermaelen, the £10million signing from Ajax who has proved an instant hit with the Arsenal fans and who has been a significant impact in English football.

"We have proved it before and now we have to do it again. We have to win the home game and I am confident we will go through.

"I think that we have the quality to do that."

Vermaelen was grateful for the away goal, which could prove vital.

"That could be important and the tie is not over yet. Not at all."
