Vermaelen assures Barcelona: I'm no injury risk

Former Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen is delighted with his move to Barcelona. The Belgian was presented to the local media yesterday.

"It's a challenge to play for such a big club. It will be a challenge to play with the best players in the world and train with them every day. I will improve as a player and hope to adapt to this great club," he said.

"I am very happy to be here. It's a dream move and a great challenge to be here. I can't wait to train and play with the best players in the world, which will make me a better footballer. Barça are one of the best teams in the world, it wasn't a difficult decision to come.

"Last year was difficult with injuries, but that happens at times in a player's career. I think it was just a coincidence and I hope that I can play lots of matches here. I'm looking to the future, not at what happened last year, which was a shame.

"It's not fun watching from the sidelines because of injury. I want to play. I'm going to start from scratch and I hope to get plenty of playing time here.

"I was injured during the World Cup. I haven't trained with Arsenal so I've got a few weeks to get back to full fitness and we'll talk to the physios to find out how long I'll take to recover."
