Verbeek selects swag of A-League stars in Socceroos squad

Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek has revealed a squad of 35 players in preparation for the next World Cup qualifier against Qatar. The match in Brisbane on Wednesday October 15th sees the usual Socceroo suspects in addition to some key players returning from injury and a plethora of A-League talent. In an enormous compliment for the national competition, 13 A-League players have been selected by Verbeek including regular Socceroos Jade North, Archie Thompson and the re-call of veteran Craig Moore who announced his international retirement earlier this year. The other nine A-League players have limited or no experience at senior international level which is a testament to the league and a great reward for the players to be included and given recognition. Sydney FC's 26-year old midfielder Shannon Cole is the surprise selection in the squad. He has played only six A-League matches and last year was playing in the NSW Premier League, but his sensational form has earned him a chance to represent his country. Other first timers include Robert Cornthwaite, Scott Jamieson, Paul Reid and Eugene Galekovic from Adelaide United, Alex Wilkinson and Matt Simon from Central Coast and Olyroos representative Stuart Musialik from Sydney FC. Mile Jedinak, also from Central Coast and Ante Covic from Newcastle, with three and two Socceroos caps respectively round out the A-League inclusions.
