Verbeek helps Milligan with Porto chance

Australia U23 skipper and former Sydney FC defender Mark Milligan looks almost certain to sign with a new club in the very near future. Milligan has been training with Portuguese club FC Porto for over a week now and looks set to sign a deal with the 2004 European Champions League winners some time next week.

After leaving Sydney in February this year, Milligan has had trials with various English Premier League clubs but has struggled to obtain the required working visa.

It is understood that Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek has had a hand in assisting Milligan with the likely move and will attempt to give him more game time in the friendly against the Netherlands this weekend.

Verbeek told The Daily Telegraph, "I am concerned about him, definitely. He's young and he's talented, and a player like that should be playing every week, if possible for a big club. It's in his best interests to find a club as soon as possible."

After realising that the only way he was to play in England would be on a loan deal, the 23-year old was forced to look elsewhere and will now almost certainly further his career in the north of Portugal.
