Verbeek happy to give Brisbane's Oar international opportunity

Australian national team coach Pim Verbeek is happy to give Brisbane Roar youngster Tommy Oar an opportunity in tonight's Asian Cup qualifier.

The 18-year old ahs come in leaps and bounds this season and after earning his first call-up (although not playing) to go to Kuwait in January, Verbeek believes he is now ready to make his Socceroos debut against Indonesia at Suncorp Stadium.

"Last time I had my doubts. He was very inexperienced and it was a very big game in Kuwait," Verbeek said.

"But if you see how he developed in the past few months, playing with the Roar and training with us, he is playing with confidence.

"Last time he was not even on the bench, but he will be in the final selection (tonight). He has a good attitude, a nice guy and (he's) hard-working.

"I think he can do a job."

Verbeek added that it was now up to Oar to take his chance and develop into a quality player rather than someone with plenty of potential.

"It's up to him now to be a really good player," the Dutchman said.

"We have had players like him in the past. Some have done exactly what we expected and some we have never heard of (again).

"That's the final step for Tommy. He has all the qualities, but it is not only about that, it's also about mentality."
