Venus William rings Cardiff's McPhail to offer support

Cardiff midfielder Stephen McPhail has been sidelined for much of the season by Sjogren's Syndrome, which can cause chronic fatigue and joint pain, but has recently found support in the shape of the five-time Wimbledon winner. Venus Williams. Williams also faces a battle with the ailment, and McPhail has revealed how her advice and experience of the illness is helping him through a challenging time in his career.

He told Wales Online: "Venus has been fantastic and I thank her for that. Hopefully we have been able to help and give each other support. It was a shock when she rang my home for the first time and we spent 40 minutes chatting.

"Venus even takes an interest in Cardiff City, keeps an eye on our results and we have chatted about the football.

"It's been very frustrating. You are great one day, and the next day you can't get out of bed. People have been asking me when I'm going to play again, but I've told them I'm injured. Until this moment, I've never really come clean about what's going on."
