Venables: Torres biggest challenge for Liverpool boss Dalglish

Former Tottenham boss Terry Venables says Kenny Dalglish's biggest challenge at Liverpool is to help Fernando Torres rediscover his best form.

In his column for The Sun, Venables wrote: "Forget all the nonsense sweeping the stands and the internet forums that the reason he is playing so badly is because he wants out of the club.

"He may well want to leave but he knows the only way to get the transfer you desire is to play well. And he's not been doing that lately.

"Yet he remains a top, top player, one of the best strikers in the world. It is just in recent months his cause and form have not been helped by club, country or injury.

"The source of his woe goes back to April when he missed the end of last term to undergo knee surgery. That is why he did not look sharp at the World Cup, where he was reduced to a bit-part player as Spain took centre stage and the trophy.

"Normally, he would and probably should have had the whole summer off to get over his surgery. But it's hard to tell a player to miss a World Cup, especially one who knew he had a decent chance of a medal.

"He may have got his medal but won few plaudits in South Africa. He still did not look right when he returned to action with Liverpool and the problems with his own form were compounded by the team's troubles.

"Seven goals and a string of ropey performances is not the return we expected from El Nino as we enter the third week of January. It's been obvious for a while Torres needs help - or rather, assistance."
