Former England coach Terry Venables says criticism from Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand will act as extra motivation for the players in Montenegro.
El Tel wrote in The Sun: "His appearance as a TV pundit on Friday should give Roy Hodgson's squad even more incentive to beat their main rivals in Group H on Tuesday.
"Ferdinand, who turned down Hodgson's offer of an England recall last week, undiplomatically chose to criticise our World Cup record as he commentated on the 8-0 win in San Marino.
"The Manchester United defender questioned England's mental toughness and quality, which is a bit naughty and strange for someone who insists that they still want to play international football.
"I am sure his comments would not have gone unnoticed in the England camp."
