Venables backing World Cup call for Man Utd veteran Neville

Former England boss Terry Venables says Manchester United captain Gary Neville can make an impact at this year's World Cup.

In his column for The Sun, Venables wrote: "I have long believed Gary, if fit, could still do a job for his country as well as his club. He was always a focused individual with a football brain beyond his years.

"I have heard some say Gary would never have been an England player had he not played for Manchester United. What rubbish.

"Gary has won so many caps because he has been the best right back in the country for most of his career. And he showed at Old Trafford on Wednesday he still has what it takes to mix it with the world's best and deserves serious consideration for an England recall.

"The way he crossed for Wayne Rooney to head in United's opener against Milan reminded me so much of how he used to put the same chances on a plate for Shearer.

"With full-backs dropping like flies, England need capable and experienced replacements. Gary Neville fits the bill completely."
