Vaughan sees himself as middle of the road for Sunderland

David Vaughan wants to make his mark with new club Sunderland by playing in the middle of the park rather than out wide. The former Blackpool man has been ear-marked as a potential candidate to fill the Black Cats problematic left side of their midfield.

"I didn't play much on the left at Blackpool. The last couple of years, I've been playing in the middle," he told the Sunderland Echo.

"The gaffer probably just gave me a run-out on the left the other night to try something. But hopefully I can play regularly in the middle.

"Up until the last couple of years, I always played on the left. But Ian Holloway switched me as soon as he came to Blackpool.

"Personally, I think that's my best position and that's where I've played consistently."
