Portsmouth striker Luke Varney is confident that Michael Appleton is the right man for the job at Portsmouth.

The 35-year old former West Bromwich Albion assistant took over at Fratton Park on November 10 but oversaw a 2-0 loss to Watford in his opening match as Pompey boss but Varney feels he will achieve success on the south coast.

"The gaffer's only been in a week, so it's going to be hard to implement his plans so early, said Varney.

"We're looking forward to working with him. He's got some different ideas and we've enjoyed it.

"He's just overseen things in his first week and I'm sure he'll now start to put his plans into action.

"We'll keep working hard in training so we're ready for another tough game at home against Leicester next week."
