Vargas named stand-in captain for Melbourne Victory

Rodrigo Vargas will take the captain's armband for Melbourne Victory in Kevin Muscat's absence.

The ever-reliable central defender will get his chance to lead the reigning champions at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night against Brisbane Roar and is looking forward to again holding the responsibility.

"I've had a few stand-in captain's roles," the experienced Vargas said yesterday.

"It's a responsibility I take on board and hopefully I can do the team proud and prove we can cover for Muscy's absence.

"Kevin is leader of the club and captain of the team and, for me, it's a big responsibility and honour," Vargas added.

"I'm happy to do the job, but on the field there's 11 leaders and 11 captains.

"I'll be doing my bit to help the boys, but it's going to be a big effort for everyone."
