Vancouver Whitecaps targeting Canadian Championship

The Nutrilite Canadian Championship is the main goal on the Vancouver Whitecaps agenda this season.

The ‘Caps are now competing in North America’s top league, MLS, but insist that winning their homeland cup competition is still extremely important.

Vancouver will take on fellow MLS outfit Toronto FC as well as NASL clubs Montreal Impact and newcomers FC Edmonton in the fourth incarnation of the round robin tournament which kicks off tonight.

Head coach Teitur Thordarson made it clear that the competition is something that the Whitecaps need to win for the good of the franchise.

“We have explained it to them (players) so they all understand it very well,” Thordarson told the Vancouver Son ahead of tonight’s clash with the Impact at Saputo Stadium.

“It’s a very important tournament and winning it has always been a goal for us. It gives you great opportunities if you win it.”

Toronto have taken out the past two tournaments whilst Montreal won the inaugural championship in 2008.
