MLS expansion franchise Vancouver Whitecaps have reportedly opened talks with free agent Jay DeMerit.

The 30-year old former Watford captain is currently out of contract and in search of a new club with the Whitecaps showing the most interest at this stage according to The Province.

The USSF Division 2 outfit enter MLS next year and are hoping to attract some quality with the USA international fitting their requirements nicely.

DeMerit has been linked with German club Wolfsburg and to a lesser extent Everton but the Whitecaps hope they can lure him to Vancouver for their first season in the top flight.
