Vancouver Whitecaps have vowed to bounce back from their Canadian Championship failure and make the MLS play-offs this season.

The second-year MLS club were beaten by Toronto FC for their nation's title last week but were able to force a 1-1 draw with Portland Timbers on the league on the weekend.

Midfielder John Thorrington says that result loss to Toronto can help the Whitecaps, currently placed fifth in the Western Conference, push towards a play-off position come the end of the MLS regular season.

"We know we have talented players and difference makers but to succeed, you need that character and that will to win," he said.

"We aired some things that needed to be aired and hopefully now we show that character in every game.

"To come back after being a goal down and not just throw in the towel shows the character we need.

"As a starting point, we need to show effort, work and passion any time we put on the jersey.

"We have one goal we're still in control of - the play-offs. We will take the lessons learned in the Canadian championship and apply them in the league."
