Vancouver Whitecaps defender Mitchell heads to FC Edmonton

Vancouver Whitecaps have sent defender Carlyle Mitchell on loan to NASL club FC Edmonton.

The 25-year old Trinidad & Tobago international will spend the 2013 season in Alberta with Edmonton after Honduran Johnny Leveron and Brazilian Paulo Jr. gained his international clearance to join the Whitecaps.

"Carlyle is a young player with a lot of potential. FC Edmonton provides Carlyle a great opportunity to earn regular playing experience under a great coaching staff led by head coach Colin Miller," said Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie.

"We are happy for Carlyle and at the same time excited to welcome back Johnny and Paulo Jr."

Central defender Mitchell was set to stay with the Whitecaps after Jay DeMerit went down in the season opener last weekend with a ruptured Achilles tendon but the arrival of Leveron has allowed him to go off and gain first team experience with Edmonton.
