Vancouver Whitecaps announce trio of new signings

Vancouver Whitecaps have snapped up three new players.

Goalkeeper Jay Nolly, Wes Knight and Philippe Davies were introduced Friday as the first players from the 2010 Caps squad to be given 2011 MLS deals.

Davies - a 19-year-old midfielder who graduated from the club's residency program - cracked the first-team lineup this year and becomes the Whitecaps' first MLS homegrown player, whose salary won't count against the $2.67-million salary cap.

Vancouver head coach Teitur Thordarson said all three players have the talent and character the club wants.

"Talent makes you interesting but attitude makes you good," he said.

Nolly's signing had been expected for a long time and Thordarson never hid the fact he wanted the 28-year-old Colorado native back next season. Nolly will battle former San Jose Earthquakes keeper Joe Cannon - taken in this week's expansion draft - for the No. 1 spot next season.
