Former Nottingham Forest and Celtic striker Pierre van Hooijdonk believes Louis van Gaal has been let down by Manchester United.
Van Hooijdonk says United's summer signings were made without any thought.
He told Voetbal International: "Louis seemed a suitable successor for David Moyes, but so far it is not working.
"A little apart from the results: The play is not at it's peak, nowhere recognizable as a Van Gaal team. I think he's unrecognizable.
"The problem began in the summer, with acquisitions made without any planning. It would appear that Manchester United haphazardly bought a few big names. The result is a collection of top footballers without consistency."
