Louis van Gaal will leave his role as manager of German powerhouse Bayern Munich at the end of the current season.
The successful Dutchman has done well during his with Bayern, winning last season's Bundesliga title and finishing runners-up in the Champions League, but is expected to step down when the current campaign finishes.
Chairman Karl-Heinz Rumenigge confirmed that van Gaal's contract would be ended earlier than was first agreed as there is a 'difference in opinion about the strategic direction of the club'.
"We were both of the opinion that it was better to part ways," said Rummenigge. "We will all pull together to overcome this difficult sporting situation and to reach our goals for the season, although it will be tough."
A joint statement from the club and manager read: "Louis van Gaal remains head coach until the end of the season. The original contract ending in 2012 is terminated after both parties agreed to it.
"The reason for ending the contract (earlier) is the different views on the strategic positioning of the club."
