Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has had Inter Milan striker Mauro Zarate scouted in recent games.
Calciomercato.com says United scouts were present for Inter's clash with Sampdoria and also their match against Palermo.
Van Gaal's prime target was Icardi who is in drawn out contract talks with Inter. It emerged this week that Inter's latest offer of €2.6 million-a-year still fell short of what the Argentine is seeking.
United have also asked for tickets for Inter's clash with Hellas Verona to take another look at Icardi.
Chelsea and Atletico Madrid are also chasing the former Barcelona junior.
