Louis van Gaal has confirmed he tried to sign Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski for Manchester United.
Van Gaal has revealed he and United were happy to splash big on the front man but Bayern weren't keen to sell.
"He is currently the best striker in the world. I also wanted to train Lewandowski and wanted to bring him to Manchester United," he told Bild.
"The price was not a problem for Manchester United, but Bayern did not want to let him go."
Lewandowski has netted 141 goals for Bayern Munich since joining from Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer in 2014.
