Louis van Gaal has cast doubt on taking the football director's job at Liverpool.

The Daily Mail says the Dutchman had emerged as the leading contender to become the Anfield club's new Sporting Director as Fenway Sports Group aim to accelerate their revamp of the club.

But the former Ajax and Holland coach, who has been out of work since he was sacked by Bayern Munich 13 months ago, has revealed he would rather be coaching.

He said: "My fingers are itching. I'm full of fire and want to work with players.

"I get dozens of offers but I'm waiting for the best one."
